Covid-19 Update 23.02.21
Following the latest announcement from the government, it has been confirmed that driving tests will start no earlier than the 12th of April, however this date could be moved back if the scientific advice does not support the release on restrictions.
As driving instructors, we must wait for an official announcement from the DVSA to confirm we are allowed to recommence training so until this is confirmed it is not possible to give a precise return date.

Covid-19 Update 28.07.20
Hi all
I just wanted to give an update that on the 3rd August 2020 when shielding ends all our instructors will be returning to teaching. This is great news for the school and we are very much looking forward to continuing lessons with current pupils and will be working through the waiting list to book new pupils in as soon as we have space. We will also be returning to teaching the Startline courses at Castle Combe Race Circuit from the 9th August.
As we are still adhering to government guidelines when we return, to protect our pupils, instructors and the spread of the virus there will be some changes to the way we carry out lessons and this information will be sent to you when a booking takes place.
Covid-19 Update 26.06.20
We are back wahoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As many of you may know, the government has announced the lift on restrictions on driving lessons starting from the 4th July.
We are currently waiting on details from the DVSA how we can return safely and in what manner we will return. Hopefully we should have more news on this in the next few days.
As many of you can appreciate, this situation has caused massive disruption to many industries and our industry is no different. The DVSA are likely to implement a phased return to testing to allow students that have had tests booked but no practice for several months time to get back up to speed. They and are also likely to prioritise certain pupils (e.g critical care workers) to not delay getting a licence in these difficult times. Initially our priority will be to help our current students in these situations. Once we have ensured our current pupils are allocated lesson slots and those with tests in the near future are accommodated to ensure they are test ready we will then prioritise those on our waiting list.
We are very keen to get back to work however we can only do so once it deemed safe and we have the right measures in place.
We appreciate all our pupils patience, both current and those on our waiting lists and we will do our best to get you all started as soon as we can but please bare with us as these are unprecedented times.
There are still a few unknowns yet so please keep an eye out on our page for further updates.
Current students should have contact from their instructors very soon once we have the outstanding details confirmed.
In the meantime, stay safe. 😃
Covid 19 update.
Following the guidance from the Government Julie Murphy's Driving School has taken the difficult decision to suspend all driving lessons for learners, those training to become a driving instructor and standards test training. This decision has not been taken likely but is necessary to assist with the spread of coronavirus and in order to ensure the safety of pupils and the instructors. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and will resume operations as soon as it is safe to do so. Your Driving instructor will be in touch to rearrange driving lessons as soon as we know we can start operations again.
We will continue to support any pupils in the 'critical worker' group so if you are already having lessons your instructor will discuss this with you. Alternatively you can contact us if you want to start or need help.
Whilst practical driving lessons are on hold it is a good time to prepare for your theory test as this can be done from home whilst maintaining social distancing. All pupils of the driving school are entitled to have free access to our online theory module so if you would like setting up please contact us confirming which driving instructor is teaching you.
I would like to thank all pupils and our driving Instructors during this difficult time. For more guidance on Covid-19 click on the following link.

Do I need to have passed my theory test before starting practical driving lessons?
It is not necessary to have passed your theory driving test before starting your practical driving lessons. Our driving instructors will support you whilst studying and this will be in advising which books to read, testing your knowledge whilst on driving lessons and answering any questions you may have. The good news is as a pupil learning to drive with Julie Murphy's Driving School we will also sign you up for free with our online theory module which will help to ensure you are ready to take you test. Just speak to your instructor when you start and this can be arranged for you.
How much are driving lessons?
Julie Murphy's Driving School appreciate the financial commitment of learning to drive and providing cheap driving lessons in the Swindon, Chippenham and surrounding areas of Wiltshire is important. We are constantly monitoring the cost of lessons with our competitors to ensure we provide good value driving lessons. Even though we only charge reasonable prices throughout the whole of your driving lessons we still offer great block rate driving lesson discounts in Swindon and Chippenham if lessons are taken during the day Monday to Friday. To find out what our discounts and best rates are contact us by clicking on the following link
How many driving lessons do I need?
The national average for a complete beginner is 45 hours with an Instructor and 22 hours of private practise. This can vary dependant on the pupils capabilities and how well they adapt to driving. We tailor lessons to suit the individual trying to encourage and support them to progress at a realistic pace.
How long are driving lessons?
Driving lessons can be anywhere between 1 hour - 8 hours per day (weekly lessons - fully intensive courses). As a Driving School our lesson times vary between 1 hour - 4 hours per day to ensure good value for money as concentration levels of pupils can suffer with prolonged periods of intense learning.
How can you start driving lessons?
Firstly you must apply for a provisional car licence. You can do this 3 months prior to your 17th Birthday. (Due to medical reasons, some students can start to learn to drive at 16). Click on the following link for more information and to start the application process.
Once you have received your licence contact us to start your driving lessons. Please remember you do not need to have passed your theory to start your on the road lessons.
Our driving school has driving instructors covering the following towns and surrounding areas:
